Chameleons
Most Chameleons are found in Africa1. Some of these small (2.8cm long and 1cm wide) to large (68.5cm long) lizards have extraordinary capabilities. Most species lay eggs; some give birth to live young. The eggs take between 4 and 24 months to hatch (depending on the species.)
- All chameleons change color depending on their feeling using their chromatophores2; humans have used clothing that changes depending on the circumstances such as a wedding, work or a feist—humans also have clothing for camouflage, but that's another story!3
- Chameleons have two fingers4; some humans are born with such transformations5
- Chameleons can see 360° around themselves withou moving; humans have camera systems that gives them 360° vision
- Chameleons can focus each eye differently to see two things at a different distance6; humans can use a set of mirrors, glaces and video cameras to replicate this effect7
- Chameleons communicate between each others using vabrations (specifically on branches); humans are not known to communicate using vibrations (other than sound)
- Chameleons have a long8 sticky tongue that goes faster than the human eye can see (i.e. it can go out and retract in less than 1/20th of a second); humans created sticky tape...
- Chameleons see ultraviolet light9; humans have video cameras to help them see ultraviolet light10
- 1. Others are naturally found in Southern Europe to India. Some feral population are found in California, Florida and Hawaii
- 2. Yeah! It is not camouflage... It is used to subdue a female, to protect themselves from the Sun, and other similar tricks. One reason why we could think it is used for camouflage is that some of the chromatophores are reflective and thus the chameleon somewhat looks like his surrounding.
- 3. In 2008, one group of scientists have realized the impossible and create a box that hides itself. This is really not yet ready for humans to become invisible, but the principle was demonstrated... That would be the ultimate camouflage indeed.
- 4. They had 5 like us, but two and three got fused together
- 5. However, the human body has changed much since we started to walk up-right on a regular basis. Some people say our brain got larger then, that may be a myth. However, the position, size and even shape of different bones have definitively changed.
- 6. This is only one of the few animals with such an ability!
- 7. Yet, humans cannot really use one eye and see in 3D...
- 8. It can be longer than their body length. After them, only bats are known to have tongues as long as their body length.
- 9. They actually like that light very very much... and can get quite excited at its sight!
- 10. Also a prism was used to discover the ultraviolet light, we could not really see it without proper equipment
